ARABS AND SALT

I am looking for information on traditions, sayings and proverbs relating to SALT in Arab culture from 1200 onwards. Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable says the English phrase "To eat a man's salt" refers to a sacred bond between host and guest in the Arab world. Is this true?  I am particularly interested in any traditions related to hospitality and authority.

ARAB THEATRE

I am taking a class in college that studies Arab theatre. To our dismay there isn't a lot of information on this topic. Not only is my professor frustrated at the lack of information, but my fellow students are as well. Is there any way to get information about Arabic theatre besides the few plays in the anthology that we were required to buy?

HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE ELDERLY

Article 38 of the Arab Charter of Human Rights concerns the family, with specific attention to the role of the elderly. This is a remarkable insertion which is very rare in international human rights covenants. Within the framework of a PhD thesis in International Law about the position of the elderly, I have been looking for information about the activities of the Experts Committee created by article 40 of the Charter, but have been unable to find anything. Can anyone help?

ARAB WOMEN IN CANADA

I am a journalist in Toronto writing an article on Canadian Arab women. The article is about how Arab women have adjusted to life in Canada and have they had to compromise on certain values. Photos will have to be provided. The magazine is called Arabian Woman. It is the first ever English language magazine for Arab women in the Gulf published from Dubai. This is urgent so please contact me on KVRamchandani@aol.com if you wish to be featured. Controversy is welcome!

ARAB IMMIGRANTS TO THE UNITED STATES

I am a student at the New York City police academy and was assigned a project on Arab immigrants. I need to know what discrimination the Arab immigrants faced when they came to New York. What jobs were there available for them? How was their culture affected? etc.

THESIS ON ARAB WOMEN

I am an MA student at Baghdad University. I am preparing a thesis entitled: "Women without men - an inquiry into the theme of the lonely woman in selected English and Arabic novels".

I am looking for help in getting sources about the status of women in the Arab society and the oppression to which she is subject. The embargo imposed on my country makes it very difficult for me to get recent sources - or even relatively old ones, especially those written in English - from which I can benefit.

I would be very grateful if you could send me by e-mail any useful article which provides me with information about the status of Arab women (the section I am writing now), the way they are treated by the Arab man, and how the modern Arab authors have presented her in their novels.
Please note that I am short of time because I am supposed to finish within two weeks. [Message dated July 12, 2001]

I am writing a thesis and I need to either prove or disprove the following statement: " The Middle East would be in a state of turmoil without the stabilising force of OPEC".  Any ideas on this?

ARABIC FOR CHILDREN

I have been searching for an immersion program to teach my children to speak Arabic.  I am interested in a summer camp situation where they can speak the language daily. If this is not available, I live in Maryland, USA, and would also be interested in immersion classes for speaking in my area.

A NON-MUSLIM WOMAN IN ALGERIA

I am travelling to Oran on business (related to my company's Algerian distributor). I would like to know how should a non-Muslim, European woman act there. How should I dress, what kind of behaviour should I avoid? I will be grateful for all tips.

SYRIAN APRICOT ROLLS

I am looking for calorie/nutritional information for a Syrian product I often purchase here in Canada which resembles 'fruit roll ups'. The best way to describe it is a mixture of apricot paste, pressed onto a large sheet. The package states that the recipe contains sugar and olive oil but I am unable to tell how much oil (=fat=high calories) this food contains. Can anyone advise me?

MARKETING AND SPORTS SPONSORSHIP IN DUBAI

I am in my final year of university in Bournemouth, England. I have had a long interest and desire to work in Dubai. I have just finished an 18 month period in a PR and sponsorship company in London, working for clients such as Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Bacardi, Orange, Umbro and the England rugby team to name but a few. I am now looking for a position within a marketing company or sports sponsorship agency. Can anyone advise me where I could find a list of marketing or sports agencies in the Dubai region?

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS

Encyclopedia of Women and Islamic Cultures (EWIC)

EWIC is envisioned as a broad based, interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, transhistorical encyclopedia, focusing specifically on women in Islamic cultures, but also including non-Muslim women in cultures where Islam has had a significant presence. It will be the first such encyclopedia. It will be published by Brill (Leiden) in 2003, as a 2,000,000 word, three-volume set. The Editorial Board includes myself as General Editor and Associate Editors Julie Peteet (University of Louisville), Afsaneh Najmabadi (Barnard College, Columbia University), Seteney Shami (Social Science Research Council), Jacqueline Siapno (Australian National University), and Jane I. Smith (Hartford Seminary). We are interested in inviting broad participation in writing of the Encyclopedia entries (including qualified graduate student, if you would like to recommend any). We are in the preliminary stages of the project. As part of the preparation, we are creating a database with names andcoordinates of pos sible contributors to the project. Potential contributors will be identified and recruited in approximately one year, though we will begin with some entries earlier. If your research is relevant to women and Islamic cultures, we would appreciate your sending us the following information: Last name, first name, institution affiliation, title, address, city, state, zip code, country, home phone, office phone, fax, email, research interests, publications.

This information will be incorporated into our database which we will use to guide us in our invitations to potential contributors. If you know of others (especially qualified graduate students) whose work would be relevant to EWIC, please let us know or pass this note on to them. While not everyone in the database will necessarily be invited to contribute, we expect our contributors to number in the hundreds. Please e-mail my research assistant, Patricia Ristow or write to her c/o: Suad Joseph, Anthropology, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis CA 95616 ( fax: (530) 752-8885.

CLASSICAL POETRY

I am trying to find out all I can about the 16 classical Arabic poetic meters, but am not having much luck. I noticed on your site that you listed half of the meters. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could possibly send me information on all the meters, as well as how al-Khalil bin Ahmad created them.

COLOURS IN ISLAM

I am seeking information about the symbolism or the rationale behind the use of certain colors in Islamic tiles.  Did blue symbolize something, etc?  Is there a symbolism behind each color in Islam? Or were the colors the result of the materials that were available?

Also,  I am trying to find information about the colors or stripes that were often used on the arches in Islam architecture. Any help you might provide would be appreciated.

GARBAGE PAIL KIDS

I am a collector of some trading cards which were released in the late 1980s. I know that they were sold in Jordan. They are called "Garbage Pail Kids", but the names of the characters and the backs are written in French. I would be very happy if someone could help me find them or tell me who I may can contact.

From: Dawud ibn Chuck
We had Garbage Pail Kids in the US as well, though they were written in English here. I can't really encourage you to collect them, though, because I don't think they are very Islamic. I can't imagine Muhammad (SAW) buying "Dead Fred" rather than feeding his people. Perhaps you could try a different site for more information. Here in the US we have comic book and antique stores which sell such novelties. Perhaps you do there. You could also look in www.ebay.com
